Optimising bus networks for growing cities 

As cities expand, so does the demand for efficient, reliable, and accessible bus networks. PSA Consulting is delivering strategic bus network plans to enhance public transport efficiency and connectivity across North Brisbane and South-East Queensland (SEQ). 

As South-East Queensland (SEQ) continues to grow rapidly, its bus network faces increasing pressure to meet rising demand. While buses account for a significant portion of public transport trips, many areas still lack access to frequent, all-day services, contributing to stagnating patronage and a decline in public transport mode share. To address these challenges, PSA was engaged to develop a strategic 10-year bus network plan aimed at enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of the region’s bus services. 

The approach involved a comprehensive analysis of SEQ’s geography, land use patterns, and transport needs, identifying key service gaps, particularly in areas with limited access to frequent buses. The project also included extensive stakeholder collaboration, including workshops with key partners to co-design network options that cater to the region’s diverse needs. 

The project included a strategic assessment outlining a case for increased investment in the bus network and a high frequency network proposal identifying areas that would benefit from enhanced services. 

An enhanced bus network for SEQ will deliver greater accessibility and improved integration across transport modes, resulting in increased public transport patronage. By aligning the network with demographic shifts and employment growth, the plan supports economic development and ensures equitable access to transport for all residents.
