Optimising bus networks for growing cities
As cities expand, so does the demand for efficient, reliable, and accessible bus networks. PSA Consulting is delivering strategic bus network plans to enhance public transport efficiency and connectivity across North Brisbane and South-East Queensland (SEQ).
PSA was engaged to assist with restructuring the North Brisbane public transport network in anticipation of significant infrastructure changes, including the Cross River Rail, Brisbane Metro, and the 2032 Olympic Games. The objective was to improve the efficiency and accessibility of the public transport system, addressing the region’s growing population and evolving travel patterns.
Our approach included a detailed analysis of the existing network to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Working closely with key stakeholders, we developed a new bus network that addresses both immediate needs and future growth. The project also included workshops with local authorities and stakeholders to co-design two network options: one aspirational, reflecting best practice design, and another more incremental, staying closer to the current network.
The project has delivered the Northern Brisbane Network Plan, which outlines a long term vision for the region’s public transport system. The plan includes a prioritised list of infrastructure projects that will support the region’s growth and improve connectivity. By considering major urban developments and key infrastructure projects, the plan is expected to enhance access to key areas such as employment centres, education, healthcare, and retail hubs, while reducing travel times. Over time, it will enable more reliable and frequent services, ensuring a public transport system that better meets the needs of the local community.
